For my first post to this blog I intended to write something memorable, something that would impart my wisdom, something that would really kill.
However, seeing that I am a firmly-planted member of gen x and apparently lack the ability to do anything that takes drive, this blog will be about the random thoughts I have as a 33 year old. Hopefully other 30-somethings will identify with something that follows, but if not, don’t worry, it’s normal for people our age to not read all the way to the end.
As the resident 30-something of this blog, I am too young to really remember the ‘70s, but old enough to remember having to pay for the internet by the minute (and not just for the dirty stuff!). Just like the name of this blog, I am caught in the middle; too young to be old, too old to be young.
I just woke up one day and realized, “damn, I guess I can’t pass as a college student anymore” or at least not enough to use the old college ID to get a movie theater discount. No, all I have to look forward to is a senior discount.
I often ask myself, where did the time go? It seems as though I barely had time to relish being 20 when I was suddenly celebrating (with reluctance) my thirtieth birthday. Don’t get me wrong, I accomplished some things in my 20s. I got married, bought a house, and have even had some decent jobs. But like a lot of people my age, I often wonder, “is this it?”
I could philosophize about my future, what it will bring; maybe think about what I “really” want to do with my life, but is that how a true gen x-er thinks? Nah, it’s much more fun to talk about other stuff, like remembering the recently departed Michael Jackson as the cool MJ in the Thriller; not the freak he had become. Hmm, I wonder, will there be a renewed interest in red, zipper-embellished jackets now?
So, if you remember having cassette tapes instead of iPods, calling your friends instead of texting, Polaroids instead of digital cameras, watching the Smurfs on Saturday mornings, jelly shoes and bracelets, hypercolor shirts, using rollerblades to get to class in college (which I just found out aren’t cool anymore, apparently) and all that other tacky stuff an ‘80s childhood and early-90s coming of age was made of, then join me fellow 30-somethings, as this blog’s for you (at least this part of it).
P.S. My fellow bloggers of this site, the 20-something and 40-something, will follow up with their thoughts soon, so all of those waiting with baited breath, hang on!
